An ocean of opportunities

The Esbjerg-company, Ocean Team Scandinavia, has specialized in cleaning process systems at the installations in the North Sea. Now this knowledge is to be turned into a systematic process and used in other areas and industries.

The process systems at the oil installations must be attacked by very stubborn coatings before the spe-cialist company, Ocean Team Scandinavia (OTS), has to give up, but normally constipation, high temperatures and lowering of pressure have revealed the problem long before that.

The knowledge accumulated by OTS concerning all types of process equipment, pipe transfer systems, filters and tanks used by the offshore industry is comprehensive, and now it is to be compiled and made sy-stematic in order to be used in more markets and more industries.

“Through our many years in this branch our staff has gained extensive knowledge of chemical cleaning, and this useful know-how is to be taken down,” states chemical engineer Pia Larsen, who joined the firm in the spring of 2006.

“Our know-how and experience is useful in other industries, primarily
the energy sector with its power plants, production and operation of
wind turbines and refineries. Our offers to the energy industry might
easily take place in cooperation with other companies in this branch,”

Some of her tasks comprise of developing a quality and environment protection system preparing the company for meeting the increasing demands for documentation.

Unique position
Ocean Team Scandinavia is able to offer a unique pro-duct. Pia Larsen at least has never heard of companies being able to compete with OTS. Some may be larger and able to handle much more comprehensive systems, and others may be smaller, but they do not fill the gap, where OTS steps in.

“We experience that the offshore industry needs help for cleaning process systems like cooling systems at the production platforms, while they have neither the resources nor personnel for managing this work internally, and they cannot have available the chemicals required for handling the various problems. Our job is to optimize the time and resources for cleaning the systems, and that is not a question of just adding some chemical to the various types of coating,” states Pia Larsen.

Headed by Maersk Oil the oil and gas industry is the dominant client of OTS, where 90% of the jobs are ad hoc related requiring specialists to be available around the clock for quick solutions. The more the operators are increasing the production, the more they are expecting us to come up with the right solution, and often they send components weighing several tons to our laboratory at Vesterhavsgade close to Esbjerg Harbour.

Jobs in Qatar and the Netherlands
OTS sends teams offshore for cleaning jobs, and often they are handling several projects simultaneously to spend the time on an installation as efficiently as possible. Looking for new projects is not limited to the North Sea, but focus is on Qatar as well, where OTS shortly will set up a workshop in cooperation with a local partner who is to be trained in chemical cleaning of process systems like the ones used by Maersk Oil. In 2006 OTS was working at the Keppel yard Verome Shipyard in Rotterdam, where the piping system of a Chinese-produced FPSO-rig, SSP Piranema, was to be cleaned of paint and treated afterwards. The Esbjerg-company, Dansk Svejse Teknik A/S, had re-commended the Danish company to Norwegian Sevan Marine, so OTS cleaned the system before the rig was sent off to start working for Perreobras in Brazil.

Opportunities in the offshore industry
Pia Larsen having 16 years of experience as Sales Manager at one of the cooperation partners of OTS, Ashland Danmark, providing cleaning products for technical pro-cess systems, has worked out a new plan for the company. The concept involves that she as its Business Development Manager is to promote the company to its primary clients in the offshore industry – as well as in other industries.

“Our know-how and experience is useful in other industries, primarily the energy sector with its power plants, production and ope-ration of wind turbines and refineries. Our offers to the energy industry might easily take place in cooperation with other companies in this branch.”

The Daily Manager of OTS, Jens Peter Thomsen, originally offered various types of equipment for sale, but then he got the successful idea of flushing hydraulic and lubeoil systems. The next phase was to offer chemical and mechanical cleaning of pro-cess systems, so now Ocean Team Scandinavia has deve-loped from being a company mainly handling development and rental of equipment to primarily concentrating on offering service.
